Code Club: Ākonga Spotlight Meet Ella!

At Code Club Aotearoa, we love catching up with club leaders, volunteers and students from all corners of the country to hear about their experiences so we can share their stories with you!

Every week, 16 eager young coders gather at Te Huarahi Linwood Ave Primary to explore their creativity and hone their skills during their lunchtime Code Club sessions. One of them is Ella, a passionate year 4 coder who loves Minecraft and the thrill of debugging!

We had a chat with Ella to hear what she loves most about Code Club at Te Huarahi.

Kia ora, Ella!

What do you enjoy most about Code Club?

That you and the other volunteers are always here to support us. I like having you to help us when we are stuck with bugs in our code. It means we can keep going with our projects.

What’s something new you have learned at Code Club that you didn’t know before?

All about bugs and how to fix them! Now I know when my project isn’t working I can go back and find the bug and solve the problem with my code.

If you could make something with code that helped people in your community, what would it be?

A watch that could tell people the answers to something when they are stuck. It would help me at kura when something is too hard for me.

What was your favourite project you worked on at Code Club and why?

Learning to hack with cookies and learning about how websites work in spy mode! I liked it because we got to eat yummy cookies and hack the web for Code Club Aotearoa, it was really fun!

Tēnā koe Ella!

Aspiring young coders like Ella take part in Code Clubs all over Aotearoa every week. This is made possible through the dedication of our volunteers, kaiako, community educators and librarians, as well as the financial support from our sponsors.

We want to give a shout-out to Younity for sponsoring this important kaupapa. Younity’s generous contributions not only make Code Club possible but also ensure that we can reach a wider audience of tamariki, especially those that face barriers to accessing extracurricular coding education. Thank you, Younity, for helping us empower the next generation of creators and innovators!
