Outreach That Has Impact in Ōtautahi

Recently, Ōtautahi Outreach became a beacon of hope and transformation for many teachers and principals in Christchurch. With the digital divide growing ever more apparent, the programme’s efforts have proven to be not just impactful but essential in equipping our tamariki (children) with the skills needed for a technology-driven future. As we reflect on the programme’s progress, the significance of continuing this programme is evident, not only for the immediate communities it serves but also for the broader tech sector in New Zealand.

Empowering Learning

“This outreach programme has helped us respond to a passion in our ākonga that we didn’t have the confidence to support ourselves.”
— 2023 Participant (teacher)

Ōtautahi Outreach reached 798 tamariki in ten schools since 2023, providing essential tech skills and fostering a culture of innovation and digital literacy. For instance, at Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka, the programme facilitated in-class engagement and supported the establishment of a weekly Code Club where 70 students explored programming, robotics, and digital design. Industry volunteers and tools like the Digital Pīkau continue to ensure that learning is not only engaging but also sustainable and aligned with real-world applications.

Stories from the classroom highlight the transformative power of the programme. Teachers who initially lacked confidence in using digital tools became active creators and innovators in their classrooms. Wayne, a long-term relief teacher, evolved from feeling out of his depth to independently leading DT&HM (Digital Technologies & Hangarau Matihiko) sessions, developing his own resources to inspire students. This shift not only improved educational outcomes but also fostered a sense of empowerment and enthusiasm among teachers and students alike.

A Smart Investment with Lasting Benefits

Ōtautahi Outreach demonstrates a strong return on investment by significantly enhancing digital literacy and preparing students for future careers in technology. With digital skills increasingly becoming a prerequisite for employment, the programme’s role in bridging the digital divide is crucial. The programme alleviated burdens on schools by supporting access to skills and resources such as laptops and robotics kits, enabling more equitable access to technology education.

The programme’s alignment with industry needs ensures that students are not just passive consumers of technology but active participants and future innovators. The involvement of tech sector volunteers in school Code Clubs facilitates authentic learning experiences and creates pathways into the tech industry. This collaboration benefits the sector by cultivating a skilled and diverse future workforce, ready to tackle the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Shaping the Future: A Broader Impact

The success of Ōtautahi Outreach underscores the importance of sustained investment in digital education. As digital technologies continue to permeate all aspects of life, the need for programmes like Ōtautahi Outreach becomes increasingly critical. Ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have access to quality digital education is paramount for New Zealand’s economic and social well-being.

Looking forward, the continued support and expansion of this programme are essential. Initiatives such as the Kōhine Robotics programme being run for young Māori and Pasifika women highlight the programme’s commitment to inclusivity and representation in tech. By fostering a diverse and skilled tech community, the programme not only addresses current digital inequities but also paves the way for a more innovative and inclusive future.

Join Us in Making a Difference

Ōtautahi Outreach’s impact is a testament to the power of community-driven digital education. By bridging the digital divide and preparing the next generation of technologists, the programme plays a pivotal role in shaping New Zealand’s digital future. As we move forward, the continued support and expansion of this initiative will be crucial in ensuring that all tamariki and rangatahi have the opportunity to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The benefits extend beyond education, enriching the tech sector and driving economic growth, making the Ōtautahi Outreach Programme an invaluable asset to Aotearoa New Zealand.
