Differentiation

Have supplies ready, or let ākonga explore the for their own prototype parts.

Consider how to get multiple bots working together to clear large debris pieces.

Extension

Explore different ocean scenarios such as the coast, harbour, deep water, or more to expand on the theme and make the environment more complex.

Challenge ākonga to consider what kind of data their bot could collect from its environment while it’s also busy cleaning.

Connect with the real world by exploreing connections to UNSDG 14 or comparing designs with the WasteShark real-life drone.

About Activity

This activity, designed specifically for Seaweek - Kaupapa Moana, challenges students to get creative with everyday objects around the classroom to prototype an attachment for their bots, from the design stage to construction, that allows them to clear debris from the ocean grid as they navigate their bots around.

Seaweek - Kaupapa Moana is Aotearoa New Zealand’s annual national week celebrating the sea. Use this activity to support your tamariki in thinking about all the ways our lives are connected to the sea. Toi Moana, Toi Tangata!
