Differentiation
Have supplies ready for constructing a pen holder attachement, or let ākonga explore for materials themselves.
Choose to include the UNSDG topic integration related to (#12) production and consumption and/or (#14) oceans and waterways.
Extension
Use the Command Cards (Shapes) PDF to challenge ākonga to input different direction algorithms and see what shapes their bots draw.
Expand the discussion around the UNSDGs to other aspects of daily lives that relate to production, consumption, and impacts on our water.
About Activity
This activity prompts students to consider an engineering challenge and apply themselves to designing, construction, testing, and using a prototype.
Learners will create a pen holder that allows their bots to draw as it moves. Then, they will write simple programs using a sequence of directional instructions to get their bots to draw a perfect circle.
This activity also has the option to integrate a discussion around UNSDG numbers 12 and 14, to prompt learners to consider the impact of the materials they choose to use both in the short and long term.
