Differentiation

Start from scratch with a simplified verison of game controller design with this Make Your Own Controller activity.

Narrow the scope of this challenge by assigning specific physical limitations to design for (e.g. feet use, single-handed, etc.)

Extension

Try the controller designs with different games. Does it function well for each? How does the game affect design effectiveness?

About Activity

Gaming is a really popular hobby, but can you think of any barriers that might prevent some people from participating?

What if a disability meant that someone couldn’t interact with a game controller the way it was designed? For example, could someone play your favorite game one-handed? Or with just their feet? What about if someone was blind or deaf?

This challenge prompts learners to design and build a game controller with the Makey Makey kit, to help improve access for someone with a specific physical limitation so that they can play a video game with full control!
