Differentiation

Let ākonga get creative with the backdrop and sprites.

Adapt the theme of the activity to apply the same game mechanics to topics or events other than Anzac Day.

Extension

Expand the game’s scoring system into multiple categories, such that players earn more points for smaller poppies and fewer points for larger ones.

About Activity

This activity challenges ākonga to program a game in Scratch that includes creating variables, manipulating backdrops, operating sounds files and assigning randomness to multiple elements of gameplay.

The object of the game will be to score points during a set time limit by acting quickly to collect poppy flowers as they appear and disappear at random sizes and in random spots across the screen.

The game involves recognisable features of Anzac Day commemorations, including the red remembrance poppy sprite and ‘The Last Post’ sound file, to help link digital design and computational thinking with the annual national day of remembrance.
