Differentiation

Start by playing the game unplugged, to focus on the kinaesthetic experience, the roles, commands and computational procedures.

Try organising the game based on scoring points, rather than on elimination.

Try making the rules get progressively more challenging as players are eliminated, like by adding more commands and actions.

Extension

Guide learners to try another activity in the Sphero Drive Series:

About Activity

This play-based activity is designed to help learners gain skills and experience with digital technologies by practising manipulating software and hardware to manoeuvre Sphero bots in a game of ‘Hare i te Whare’.

Learners will create a playing field with whare structures and use Drive mode to control their bot’s direction and speed in real time. They will do their be the last bot standing in this elimination game where one person is the Commander (te kaiwhakahau), who calls out commands, and everyone else is a Controller (he kaiurungi), who must work quickly to guide their Sphero to follow instructions.

Each round, anyone whose Sphero does not act quickly enough is eliminated until there is a final winner! Learners will have fun, practise essential motor skills and follow computational procedures while connecting directly with digital technologies.

The Commands

  • “Hare” = Freeze! Halt in place.

  • “Whare”

    • Unplugged: Make pairs, forming a roof with your arms

    • Plugged In: Make pairs, with bots touching

  • “Hare i te whare”

    • Unplugged: Make groupe of three, with two people forming roof-arms and the third person underneath

    • Plugged In: Make groups of three, with bots touching
