Te Rā o Waitangi
Observed on February 6th each year, this day marks the 1840 signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, affirming a commitment to peace, mutual benefit, and the authority of Māori. People commemorate the day in different ways, such as attending ceremonies, taking part in cultural performances, or visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. While it’s a day to celebrate unity, it’s also an occasion to protest and discuss ongoing challenges. Te Rā o Waitangi is an important reminder of a shared history, an agreement to work together, a framework for caring for each other an the environment, and more.
